October’s Bright Blue Weather

What season do you like? What month do you like? For me, I love the autumn. I love October.

The leaves change color.

The leaves are orange, red, and yellow.

You can buy orange pumpkins.

You can make jack-o-lanterns.

You can buy squash.

You use squash to decorate.

You don’t eat it.

My favorite part of autumn is the sky.

Every day is beautiful.

The sky is blue.

It doesn’t rain a lot.

In 1893, the poet Helen Hunt Jackson wrote a poem about October’s sky. These vocabulary words will help you understand it:

rival = compete with                   jewels = valuable stones           twining (twine) = tangling (tangle)

comrades = friends                    seek = look for                           boast = brag

Suns and skies and clouds of June,

        And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October’s bright blue weather;

    When on the ground red apples lie
In piles like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining;

    When comrades seek sweet country haunts,
By twos and twos together,
And count like misers, hour by hour,
October’s bright blue weather.

    O suns and skies and flowers of June,
Count all your boasts together,
Love loveth best of all the year
October’s bright blue weather.

COMMENT:

1) Do you like the autumn (fall)? Why?

2) Do you buy pumpkins and squash?

3) Do you think October’s sky is the bluest?
