Google Maps – Beginning to Intermediate

Objective: Go to a local point of interest by using Google Maps. Learn how to use Google Maps for walking, driving, and bus directions.

Materials: Computer or tablet with internet access. You will also need your starting address and the address of a local point of interest. Some examples; fire station, police station, bank, grocery store.

Application

Part 1:

  • Go to: maps.google.com

  • Type in your starting address in the search box at the top of the page.

  • You will see your location on a map.

Part 2:

  • Go to “Get Directions” on the top left hand side of the page in a gray rectangle.

  • Type in any address you would like to get directions to from your starting location next to the green circle with the letter A in it.

  • For practice type the addresses you have found for local points of interest that might be useful for your students. For example, banks, grocery stores, police station, and fire station that are close to the site.

  • Once the address has been entered click the blue box “Get Directions”.

  • The map will be displayed on the right side and step by step directions will be on the left side of the page. There will also be a summary of how far you will have to travel and how long it will take you to get there.

  • On the left side of the page above the address you will see several icons. The first icon is that of a car. This should be clicked for driving directions. Next to the car is the bus. You may click this to see if there is a bus that travels from your house to your destination. The third icon is a pedestrian walking. This should be clicked for walking directions. The last icon is that of a bike. Clicking this icon will give students a bike friendly way to get to their destination.

  • If you click the bus icon you will be asked when you are leaving. It will then give you several suggested routes along with length of time to get there.

  • If you click the walking icon it will give you walking directions. It will give you several suggested routes along with length of time and mileage to get there.

  • If you click the bike icon it will give you biking directions. It will give you several suggested routes along with length of time and mileage to get there.
